Material Management
Construction Material Management
CMMS Process
On a global scale, organisations are facing difficult economic challenges in the construction of new facilities. There is demand for continuous improvement in the productivity, profitability and quality control of such projects, of all sizes. In using CMMS, our goal is to ensure that every project is completed on schedule, under budget and with minimum material surplus.
The Right Material, At the Right Time
Customer: Design & Material Specification.
CMMS: Streamlined Management of Materials and Pricing.
A detailed, comprehensive Individual Electronic Project Catalog is built listing the specific products to be used throughout the project. This becomes the “go-to” source for electrical material at all stages of the project.
The catalog ensures that:
• Only material from approved manufacturers is used
• Pricing is consistent
• The number of specialty and non-stock items requests is kept to a minimum
• Accurate lead times are entered for each item including the time to manufacture + transit time + customs time (+ a little cushion).
Customer: Production of Drawings.
CMMS: Material Take Offs (MTO).
Wholesale Electric CMMS professionals use their unique combination of field construction experience and product knowledge to produce an accurate and detailed Material Take Offs (MTOs) from the electrical drawings. These MTOs list the materials, their quantities and types and where they are to be installed on the site.
Customer: Construction Schedule.
CMMS: Development of Work Plan.
CMMS uses the customer’s Construction Schedule to create the Purchase Schedule for Material, the Production Schedule for Manufacturers and ultimately the Work Plan for the Release of Material.
Construction contractors can enter the Required On-Site Dates for areas/work packages into the CMMS system.
A Work Plan based on the Required On-Site Date is developed which determines purchasing and inventory activites.
Customer: Field Material Release.
CMMS: Electronic Release of Material.
Electronic release of material to the construction crew on an as-needed basis reduces project investment and field material management costs as well as material surplus.
Construction workers pick up and sign for work packages containing exactly what they need for the work tasks at hand according to the Construction Schedule. With the help of CMMS Cable Management, cable is pre-cut to the tasks in order to reduce measuring and cutting time during installation and to reduce surplus.
Customer: Project Status Review.
CMMS: Review.
Real-time, any-time access to the project file is available via our web-based system, making global project management easier and more efficient.
The configurable components of the CMMS allow customers to tailor our system to fit their specific project and reporting requirements.

At CMMS, our goal is to ensure that every project is completed on schedule, under budget and with minimum material surplus.
The Motiva Port Arthur Refinery is the largest refinery in the U.S., proving no one is more dedicated and committed in the industry to making projects small or large successful than Wholesale Electric’s CMMS Division. Wholesale Electric supplied 145 million dollars of electrical bulks and cable for 7 new units along with the ISBL, OSBL and Temp Power all at the same time during a 3 1/2 year period.
Since 1979, Wholesale Electric has provided electrical materials management services to more than 400 projects totaling more than $250 billion of capital expenditures in both domestic and international locations.
We have achieved this success with another success – no recordable accidents on any jobsite.
Cable Management
CMMS Cable Management
There are two very good reasons for CMMS Cable Management. Firstly, cables represent more than 50% of the typical bulk electrical expenditures on Capital Projects. CMMS Cable Management significantly reduces investment costs. Secondly, cable is the single most likely item to become a liability to any project through waste, damage, theft, or surplus. WEA CMMS Cable Management eliminates these pressures, contributing significantly to cost savings.
How it works
After determining which cable sizes need managing, the CMMS team enters the roll-up quantities from the engineered cable MTO list into the Project Catalog.
Wholesale Electric CMMS negotiates return policy with cable manufacturers and purchases cable on the longest possible master reels.
The CMMS Cable Management is used to calculate cable cuts in such a way as to minimize waste on reels and to do that, it also tracks inventory changes by reel and reel length.
When a field-verified length of cable is requested, the system determines the most efficient reel from which to cut the request. All cut lengths are tagged by circuit ID as per the field release. At any time, real-time status of cable circuit numbers and reel lengths can be accessed online.
Empty reels are removed from the job site, keeping it clean and safe. Reels are re-used to keep costs low.
Cable Management Benefits
Increases
- Field productivity. Cable is available
when needed and already cut to the
right lengths
Eliminates
- Cable surplus and shrinkage on the
job site.
Reduces
- Cable damage in the field.
- Storage, handling equipment and
security costs. - Project investment costs. The project
is invoiced only when cable is
released to the field.
